Designed by architects John M. Carrere and Thomas Hastings in the elegant
Beaux-Arts style (1911), this imposing building, with its arcaded entryway
flanked by powerful lion sculptures, has more than 50 million items in its
collections, making it one of the world's five greatest research libraries.
