Designed by architects William A. Boring and Edward L. Tilton in the French
Renaissance style to replace a building destroyed by fire in 1897, Ellis Island received more than 17 million immigrants between 1900 and 1954.
Impeccably restored, it reopened as a National Museum in September 1990. National Historic Landmark May 11, 1965.
