Architect William van Alen's streamlined
Art Deco design, 77 stories high, paid
homage to the automobile as the symbol
of modernity. Its stainless-steel orna-
mentation, ceramic brickwork, and
185-foot spire have made it a unique
feature of the skyline since 1930.
N.Y.C. Landmark September 12, 1978.
