The world's first steel-wire suspension bridge,
with its 176-foot Gothic towers,
spans the East River. Designed by engineer John A. Roebling, and built by
his son
Washington Roebling, the 5,989-foot bridge was the longest ever when it opened
in 1883, to become a symbol of the city. N.Y.C. Landmark August 24, 1967.
